Mazzola Becomes Goldeyes Greatest Home Run Hitter
Josh Mazzola is now the Winnipeg
Goldeyes’ Home Run King. On July 26 at
Community America Ballpark in Kansas
City, Kan., Mazzola hit a two-run home
run in the top of the eighth to help the
Goldeyes drill the Kansas City T-Bones
14-2. It was Mazzola’s 66th home run as a
member of the Goldeyes, breaking former
first baseman Terry Lee’s career mark of
65 (1995-97). It was also Mazzola’s 100th
home run as a professional and his leagueleading 16th home run of the season.
Mazzola is having one of the best years of
his career. At press time, he was hitting .319
with 16 homers, 11 doubles, seven stolen
bases, 47 runs scored and 46 RBI in all 61 of
his team’s games.
Coombs Playing Regularly for Argos, Demski Makes Riders
Former University of Manitoba star Anthony Coombs, a graduate
of Winnipeg’s Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, not only made the CFL’s
Toronto Argonauts this season, he’s playing regularly. Meanwhile, in
Saskatchewan, Oak Park graduate and former U of M All-Canadian,
Nic Demski, is
returning punts
and kickoffs for
the Roughriders.
Coombs and
Demski are part of a
group of 11 former
Bisons, playing in
the CFL, a group that includes, Edmonton’s Eddie Steele (Kelvin)
and Don Oramasionwu (Kelvin), Ottawa’s Kienan LaFrance
(Sturgeon Heights) and Toronto’s Thomas Miles (Churchill).
