eason Top 10
Matt Kaneski:
OL – St Paul’s:
Kaneski, 17, the left guard for the
powerhouse AAA St. Paul’s Crusaders,
is a 6-foot, 260-pound Grade 12 star
who was the first Grade 10 player at St.
Paul’s to make the AAA team. In 2011,
he was selected as the best offensive
lineman at a camp in Chicago and then
played in Dallas Cowboy Stadium as an
“All American” in the O-D Youth Bowl. In
2013, he represented Canada against
the Americans in the Eastbay U-15 Youth
All-American Bowl in San Antonio and
then dominated the U-16 Blue-Gold
game in May where his play “blew away”
Team West coaches who said his skills
“are exceptional” for his age.” Now a
senior and an outstanding student, this
member of U-18 Team Manitoba will be
one of the most sought-after high school
linemen by Canadian – and American –
universities next season.
Marcel Arruda Welch:
DB/RB/KR – Garden City:
A cornerback with tremendous hands and speed, he can cover, intercept and run with
the ball after he takes it away. Scouts believe he might be the best defensive back
ever to come out of the WHSFL and that says a lot, considering how good University
of Manitoba starting safety Jayden McKoy was in his final year at Murdoch. He’s a
6-foot, 175-pound corner who has been timed at 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. He’s also a
tremendous basketball player in a very good Fighting Gophers program. According to
his coach, Beau Wilks, “Marcel is the one of the most explosive athletes in the WHSFL.
He is a very exciting player to watch. Marcel is such a versatile athlete that he can
make game-changing plays in numerous capacities. He can break a long run, catch
a pass out of the backfield and make defenders miss, intercept a pass and take it the
other way or return a kick to the house. Marcel’s overall athleticism and strong desire
to compete allow him to do the special things he can on the football field.”
