It’ s not easy suiting up every night for a WNBA team. Plenty of the talent and excitement of women’ s basketball gets swept under the rug for being, well, women’ s basketball. While many do share this sentiment, it’ s clear that there are a handful of top players in the league who think otherwise.
It may not be easy to play in the WNBA and fight for respect and airtime on ESPN, but some of the top players are looking to prove that they ball too. It’ s not just about the NBA anymore. These ladies have serious skills and are producing some amazing storylines already.
The main headline that can be given to this WNBA season is simple: it’ s all about a clean slate.
Atlanta’ s Angel McCoughtry was hoping for a clean slate after she was suspended last season for rule violations. And if you look at the WNBA stat lines, it looks like she’ s bounced back in a huge way.
Leading the Atlanta Dream to the current lead of the Eastern Conference, McCoughtry is second in points per game, first in steals and fifth in assists. If anyone doubted that Angel would put the past behind her in a big way, they’ ve been shut down hard.
McCoughtry has battled back from a rough 2012 season for Atlanta and is proving her worth to the league. But how about another form of clean slate – for rookies who are starting out their careers and looking to make a dent in this league.
Two first-timers instantly come to mind, and they just so happen to be the top two picks from this year’ s WNBA entry draft.
