The economic importance of pets can be measured by the power
of industries that supplies foods, medicines, and care and accessories to living in modern society. In Colombia, as in most developed countries, productions lines and marketing aimed at pets
are equivalent to lines for industrial animal’s species. The Food
and Drug Administration regulation of pet food is similar to that
for other animal foods. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act
(FFDCA) requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to
eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled. Pharmaceutical industries are so
much advanced and they take knowledge from human medicine.
Pet care is booming in emerging markets, as the growing middle
class. A considerable percentage of people buy dogs or other kind
of animals for pleasure or security and starts doting on them. Simultaneously, and to fill the emerging market’s requirements, thousands of laboratories and particular people, are working in genetic
improvement to obtain new races. Everywhere, we have new animals and new implements and the market is growing up quickly.
