CRICKET CLUB
Sheffield Collegiate CC has been working hard during the
off-season and appear to be well set up for a successful 2019.
Sport Yorkshire Magazine recently caught up with their Junior
Co-ordinator Andy Tyas to find out more about how the club
has been getting along lately.
Involvement The Role
He told us, “I have been involved
at SCCC for over fourteen years now.
I took my sons down to join the junior
section when they were just five and
seven years old and they are now both
in our top three senior teams (age 18 &
20) having played at all junior age group
levels.
The facilities at the club are excellent
and the coaching of the junior section is
excellent and well organised. Everybody
is made welcome and all ages and
abilities are encouraged to take part. My
first role at the club was U9 manager
and from there I moved up through
the age groups, became a qualified ECB
level 2 coach and I am now junior co-
ordinator.” “We run multiple teams at all age
groups so one of the biggest challenges
is getting the mix of each team correct
at the start of the season. We have
to consider which Division a team is
playing in, the ability of the players and
also friendship groups of player/parents
so they can get to midweek away game
in particular and share lifts. We also look
for regular attendance at training and
also behaviour and application during
the sessions.
The most rewarding aspect of the role
is to see so many juniors participating
and enjoying playing cricket. I played
for over forty years before retiring two
years ago and made many friends (and
the odd enemy!) during this period. We
offer junior cricket from age 5 upwards
28 Issue 01
(Allstars) through to U18 and the other
most rewarding aspect is to see many of
our juniors continue playing in our five
senior teams on Saturdays.”
Atmosphere
“The mood is excellent at the club.
We have a new first team captain (Josh
Varley) and have made some good
signings so we hope that our First team
is competitive in the Yorkshire League
South. Josh is a former club junior and
has come through the ranks so we all
hope that he has an excellent first year.
The attendances at Winter nets
from U9s through to seniors has been
excellent and we had a group of talented
juniors going overseas to Desert Springs
Spain on 11th April for a pre- season
warm weather training camp - a first
