Youth Community Challenges/Ambitions
“Pocklington Tennis Club three years
ago with the onset of the Floodlight
Project made the decision to start from
scratch with a coaching programme
that the club would have control of
albeit with a self-employed coach. We
advertised the role of coach at the Club.
We attracted worldwide attention from
coaches in most continents.
However, the Club were extremely
fortunate in having an application from
Sean Evans. He gave the best interview
and was rightly selected. Sean also only
lives a few miles away from the Club. He
himself plays tennis to a standard few
have seen at Pocklington Tennis Club.
He is assisted and also mentored by two
ladies from the committee to organise
the Junior Section of the Club.
Junior membership has risen by
300%. The Club feels very lucky to have
such a great team of people working in
the right direction for the Club. Youth
development is the future of the Club.
We can offer a fully safe environment
for parents to drop off their children
and young people and know the site is
secure and a full safeguarding policy is
in place.” “Pocklington Tennis Club is without
doubt a community club. Sean Evans
offers free coaching to all local primary
and junior schools in the area. The
Club also offer their facilities to the
local schools for their use. We have a
superb relationship with our neighbours
Pocklington School, who use our courts
for training and matches. In return we
are able to use some of their courts on
match nights as an overflow to our own
facilities.
In
the
recent
development
Pocklington Tennis Club erected secure
fencing around the premises. The
fencing is fitted with a gate entry system.
This enables members of the public who
are not members of the Tennis Club to
book a court with floodlights if necessary
and come and play tennis at Pocklington
Tennis Club. Pocklington Tennis Club
has accreditation from the East Riding of
Yorkshire Council (ERCAS) and also the
L.T.A. The Club are also a supporter of
East Yorkshire Healthwatch.” “Pocklington Tennis Club must
continue to move forward with its
development. We must make the club
inclusive, attracting a full cross section
of society and dispel the idea that tennis
is elitist. We must not only maintain our
current membership but increase it. We
have the capacity. This will in the ‘Long
run’ make the club fully sustainable.
As already mentioned we must
maintain and grow our membership. We
will continue to maintain and develop
our facilities. Pocklington as a town is
growing massively in every direction.
We need to have facilities for the future
and projects such as covered tennis
courts are indeed the way forward.
We are very lucky in having
sponsorship from local companies
who sponsor the match balls and also
advertise with the club by means of
boards around the courts. We appreciate
what support these sponsors give and
can give to support the club in the
future.”
Integration
“When a young person gets to a
standard to be able to play with adults
they are invited to attend both coaching
and the ‘Club Nights’ which are held.
They are also invited to represent the
Club in senior matches. If they are of a
very good standard the coach will put
them forward into the L.T.A.s pathway
system and selection for County
Coaching etc.”
