Yarm and Eaglescliffe FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORTNEMAG Yarm and Eaglescliffe FOOTBALL CLUB Yarm and Eaglescliffe FC has enjoyed a fine campaign this time around, winning the North Riding Saturday County Cup. Sport NE Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Daniel Hawkins to find out more about the good work the club ahs been doing lately. Involvement He told us, “I have been involved with the club ever since the very first training session back in March 2017. My good work friend Luke Allen, founder of the Club and current player, secretary and treasurer, asked me to come down as he knew I was an ex-District and TJFA footballer during my time at school. Even though I hadn’t played Club football since my College days back in 2010, I felt like it was something I was keen to be getting back in to, and with my long-time commitment of going to watch Middlesbrough FC as a season ticket dying due to their struggles in the Premier League, I felt like it was the perfect time to get back playing.” Challenges/Ambitions “I think the Club really has ambitions to push on in to the Northern League or the Wearside League in the next five years. In the meantime, while we await news about the possible development of our facilities, we have ambitions to become League champions in the North Riding Premier Division and hopefully get some silverware which we can proudly display in our clubhouse in the future! We have promising plans already in motion to expand next season, creating an Over 35’s side and a Reserve side on Sundays. I think the biggest challenge is obviously going to be to continue to grow as a Club in the coming years, especially with aspects such as finances and securing our own facilities. Another challenge may also be current Northern/Wearside League clubs sniffing around for some of our players, but I hope that all of us currently involved and those coming in can really buy into what we all believe this Club can achieve in the coming years.” Present “The Club is bouncing at the minute and everyone has good reason to be proud of the season so far. With a steady first campaign under our belts we seem to have really pushed on this season and currently sit 3rd in the North Riding Premier Division and won the North Riding County Cup in only our second year of existence. Last season I’d say we had a pretty solid first season as a newly formed Club. Despite finding it hard to begin with, losing our first seven league games and getting knocked out of a Cup competition, we steadily improved and comfortably finished mid-table. All that is credit to the lads that turned up each week when we struggled at the start and trained hard during the week. The role of our newly appointed Coach back then (and now Chairman) Marty Clennett was key to our development and securing our Premier Division status last season too so massive credit must go to him also.” Youth “I believe that the success of the club over the past eighteen months, especially this season, has led to word getting out that Yarm now has an exciting Men’s Football Team on the up, and as such we’ve been able to attract some very good youth prospects along the way. Last season we fielded a couple of under 20’s who were regulars in the side, although that record has since been smashed this season by a 16-year-old making his debut for us back in October. Our manager Glenn Kyle is very careful with integrating the young lads into the senior game. Giving them 10-15 minutes at the end of the game is great to begin their development within such a physical and competitive league, but the young lads are mixing it with the ‘more experienced’ members of the squad at every training session. Plans for a new Reserves team to begin next season will allow the youngsters and those needing game time to grow into the senior game, ensuring they are ready to help on Saturdays when they are needed.” Community “We are absolutely a community club. I think the number of local lads playing for us, especially the youngsters we are now getting to come down, speaks volumes about our role in the community. We have numerous sponsorships with the local businesses and have a number of locals down to watch us every week. We also get involved with local charities too and over the past two years have created Christmas CAUSE hampers for those who would otherwise find Christmas a struggle, which is something that all the players, coaching staff, supporters and sponsors get involved with and contribute to.” GGN Sportscare specialises in school ground and sports pitch maintenance Established in 1990 we provide a personal, high quality service to all of our clients. We sponsor a couple of players at the club and have been doing that since the club formed last year. I would like to say Marty and Luke do a tremendous job down at the club and it was great to see the club win the Cup Final and I’d like to congratulate them on their success.” Guy Jones 24 Issue 01
