The Facts
• 47 % of adults participated in at least one form of gambling in past 4 weeks ( 49 % in 2015 )
• 16 % of adults participated in at least one form of online gambling in past 4 weeks ( 15 % in 2015 )
• Around 1 in 6 children participated in a gambling activity in the last week – consistent since 2012
• Problem gambling prevalence in England and Scotland was 0.6 % in 2012
• Men were more likely than women to be classified as a problem gambler ( 1 % compared with 0.2 %)
• Problem gambling prevalence was highest among those aged 16-24 ( 2.4 %) and lowest among those aged 75 and over ( 0.4 %)
The Gambling Commission
The Gambling Commission was setup under the Gambling Act 2005 to regulate commercial gambling in Great Britain in partnership with licensing authorities .
They permit gambling as long as it is crime-free , fair and open and children and other vulnerable people are protected . They also advise central and local government on the impact of gambling and its regulation , holding the industry to account , ensuring operators meet licensing standards and take action against those that don ’ t .
