realised that they hung up their boots a bit prematurely and
have returned to bolster the squad and have become mentors to
a very talented group of youth players who are now age ready
for senior rugby. Notable mentions here for Talfan
Alcock, Kiaran Mackay, Steffan Pike Davies,
Liam Danter, Callum Davies and Tom
Thorneycroft.
Mentions also for two ‘old-
heads’ who have joined the club
from Brynamman and Penybanc
who have brought incredible
experience and ‘dog’ to the
squad, namely Shaun Caddel
and Matthew Brayley (ex-
Swansea RFC). In addition,
how could we not mention
Wales and British Lion,
Shane Williams, who is also
in the mix of this squad this
season.”
Team Spirit
“The success of this group
has brought an incredible sense of
team spirit which has proven to be
unbreakable during difficult periods
this year and has helped them handle high-
pressure situations incredibly well. Hence why
they remain unbeaten.
We are also fortunate to have an outstanding club captain in
Sean Mangan who ensures that the squad are always on their
toes and leads on the field by example. Behind the scenes, we
have Barry Windsor as acting Team Manager who does the
dirty work off the field.”
Youth
“Youth rugby is incredibly important,
and there is ample evidence to prove
that our senior sides achievements are
far greater when we have a youth
side. Regrettably, as with most
clubs, we have not always had
sufficient players to run a team
and this has had a significant
knock-on effect on the 1st and
2nd XV’s.
I am pleased to say that
since the Amman United had
its first youth side in 1949-
50 there have not been too
many seasons without a team
running. The importance of
the youth players has had a big
impact on our team this year and
we wouldn’t be where we were
without them. Players such as Dan
Jones recently out of youth rugby and
those already mentioned who could still
be playing youth rugby.
A number of the players also featured in the
S4C series ‘Clwb Rygbi Shane’ during which he coached
our youth side for the season. The show propelled some of this
team to stardom, Alun Lewis and most notably Rhys ‘Piggy’
Phillips.
Glyn Lewis of Club sponsor L&G electrical
recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine, saying,
“I am a club member and have thoroughly
enjoyed watching the team playing this season.
My business has sponsored the club for a few
years now and I like to help out when I can.
Myself and Christopher would like to wish
everyone associated with the club continued
success!”
