oking Hockey Club is one of the biggest in the Country offering
hockey at all levels, ages and ranges of commitment. They state on
their website (www.wokinghc.com) it is ‘not just about the hockey’ as for many of
their players, whilst they love a competitive game, the social side is as important.
They run nine men’s teams, six ladies, one mixed and
numerous junior sides. The England Hockey ‘Back to Hockey’
initiative has been very successful and they have many new
members who are discovering (or rediscovering!) a passion for
hockey.
Coaches play a big role and every team in the club has access
to training with quality coaching. They currently have three
Level 3 coaches which means that the numerous Level 2 and 1
coaches along with volunteers can all be continually mentored
and developed throughout the season. Club Secretary Katy
Robinson took the time to give us an insight into the fine work
being done at Woking.
The Role
She started by explaining her role, saying, “Woking took
the decision about eight years ago to employ a Development
Officer to ensure that our external pitch customers were looked
after and the club was developed within the Community,
schools and England Hockey.
That role has morphed into what I do now as Club
Secretary. It incorporates the smooth running of the club with
the development which encompasses raising money, saving
money, making best use of our facilities and anything between
filling the soap dispenser to putting in funding bids!
My biggest challenge is that it has become a huge role
and can feel like it is taking over my life. However, it also fits
brilliantly in to my work/life balance and as any parent knows
having a flexible job is a massive help – I can work at any time
of the day and from anywhere. I’m a lifelong member and love
hockey so my role enables me to ensure that we continue to
thrive and evolve to stay current.”
