Tim Ryan is the current head coach of Highfield Rugby Club . He recently told Rugby Club Magazine , “ My younger brother Dave , who started playing for Highfield before me , asked me down to the club . I was playing a lot of Gaelic football at the time but then at the age of 13 I fitted straight into the club . The rest is history as they say .
Highfield were relegated three years ago and it has always been my ambition to make Highfield a Division 1 club . They have such a great infrastructure with 80- 90 % of the players being home grown . Over the years many of the clubs players , including myself , Dave and others who wanted to compete at the highest possible level had no choice but to move on and play for the more successful teams . If and when we become one of the country ’ s top 20 clubs there is going to be less need for players to leave so retention will become easier .
Currently , I have to say that I am greedy for success but not in the sense of rivalry against other clubs ; we are only concerned with our side of the street but my ambition is to have success across all teams at all levels . When you look at the more successful clubs they have this balance of success across their teams . It was great for our seconds to win their
league and for four seasons now our 3rds have won the minor cup .
My team selections and my choices are open to question and when they have been challenged I have to say that the players and teams have stepped up to the mark . The truth is I am very proud of all my players and what they have delivered . A few moments in rugby can make all the difference but I believe if we maintain our positive attitude coupled with the talent amongst our under age players coming through we will have many successful seasons to come !”
Brendan Troy of long standing club sponsor Troy Building recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive association with Highfield Rugby Club , saying , “ I was born and bred in Bishopstown and played U13s and U14s for the club and after stepping away for a few years returned to play prop for the U20s until a back injury in my early 30s put an end to my playing career . The family business ‘ Troy Building ’ has continued to sponsor the club for more than 20 years now and we like to help out whenever we can .
The club have played some great rugby this season and I have enjoyed watching them . They were unlucky to miss out on promotion but with so many youngsters coming through I ’ m sure they will succeed next season . Best wishes to everyone associated with Highfield Rugby Club !”
