Sport in Profile Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative David Hurst to find out more about how the club is getting along at present. He told us. “I am currently Treasurer of Appleton CC in Cheshire. I first started playing at Appleton in 1977 at seventeen years old. I had been playing junior cricket for several years at another bigger local club and was a regular on their U18 team. Surprisingly, they did not offer a pathway to play open age cricket.” “I decided to move to Appleton where I was made incredibly welcome. I started off in the Sunday team. The following year I became a second team regular and two years after that I became an established 1st XI player. I was 60 Issue 16 offered opportunities to bat and bowl when I joined the Club, which helped my development tremendously and to this day one of the Club’s principles is that players who are picked to play are given an opportunity to contribute to the game, as opposed to just making up the numbers. “I have been at the club now for 40 years. I have been Treasurer for 29 years and had two stints as 1st XI Captain in 1983/4 and 2000/09 where the 1st team won four trophies during my tenure. I have been an ECB qualified coach since 2004. “My journey as Club Treasurer has been interesting and eventful, from dealing with the insurance fall out from two major fires to being part of the team that acquired our ground in 1997. We further developed the facility in 2005 under a £325k development programme. The most challenging aspect of my role is balancing our day to day cash flows, whilst ensuring funds are available for future developments. “The Club continually seeks to improve its facilities for the membership.
