Masham
Sports Club
Masham Sports Club does a superb job of providing people
from their local area with an opportunity to enjoy a variety of
different sports. Sport in Profile Magazine recently caught up
with their Chairman Mark Ellis to find out more.
Involvement
He told us, “I joined Masham Cricket Club in 2008 having
not played cricket for a couple of seasons. I previously had
been Secretary and 1st team captain at another local team,
Bedale. I was attracted to Masham knowing the standard of
cricket would still be challenging for me and secondly because
the facilities and the settings were both impressive. It has been
a great 9 years!”
The Role
“As both Chairman of the Cricket Club and the wider
Masham Sports Association (Cricket, Football, Tennis &
Bowls) I am trying to drive change to put the association in a
position where it can be around for many more years to come.
Our clubhouse is in need of improvement and
modernisation and I am currently working therefore with a
number of people and organisations to get the appropriate
funding in place to move this project through to the next
stage. This work became even more necessary following the
floods in December 2015 when the whole of our sporting area
including the clubhouse was flooded. So as well as improving
our clubhouse we need to make it flood proof.”
Rewards
“Without doubt the most rewarding thing is still being
involved in sport, in whatever capacity. Sport has provided

me with so many highs and introduced me to so many good
friends. I still a get a buzz every Saturday morning, knowing
it’s both match day, I still play, and being involved in coaching
the juniors. I want to ensure that the good times I have had
in sport are available for others long into the future. So that
means good facilities and lots of people to enjoy it.”
Atmosphere
“The whole sports association is in good shape at the
moment; the new football season has started and both teams
are confident of good seasons, the Tennis and Bowls clubs
have just ended their summer seasons, both feeling positive
about the future, although both would like more members and
the cricket club continue to make excellent progress across all
age groups and teams.
Obviously what happens on the field, court or green is
hugely important and all of the clubs are competing at a good
level. All clubs recognise that our sporting success is down to
a small but dedicated group of volunteers who work so hard to
maintain the excellent sporting facilities we all enjoy.”
2017
“From a cricket perspective it’s been a really good year;
our 1st XI finished second in their league, the 2nd XI finished
in third place in their league whilst our juniors won trophies
as well as reaching finals at most age group levels. We were
also invited to host the Yorkshire Champions trophy, which
