It has been a successful year for all of the Newcastle Roller
Girls teams this season. Sport in Profile Magazine recently
caught up with their Head Coach Kerri ‘Kalamity’ James to
find out more about how they have been getting along.
Involvement Present
She told us, “I’ve been skating and
involved with Newcastle Roller Girls
for about eight and a half years. A
friend founded the league, asked me if
I wanted to come along, and I’ve been
there at least twice a week ever since!” “I’d say the atmosphere here is
pretty good! We’ve got three teams
so everyone gets a fair shot at playing
games which is good for skater retention
and morale.
Our A team have had a cracking
year after a wobbly start. Losing some

key players at the start of the year when
we had a high level tournament at home
planned in Spring was a big blow to our
plans for world domination! But we took
some time to rebuild, came back fighting
and had a great showing at the Mayday
Mayhem tournament in Colorado, USA.
Our B team the, Whippin’ Hinnies,
have really pushed themselves this
“I’m head coach for the league. We
have around 80 members and three
travel teams (A Team - The Canny
Belters, B Team - the Whippin’ Hinnies
and C team - The North Cs) - it can be
difficult juggling the different needs of
all three teams!
Luckily a great coaching team means
the workload gets spread out. The most
rewarding aspect of my role is seeing
other people blossom into confident
skaters. I also LIVE for how much body
confidence roller derby gives women of
every size.”
