Fr. Murphy ’ s Camogie and Ladies FOLLOW US ONLINE twitter.com/sportinprofile to their University championship. These were powerful team building exercises for both and St. Mary’s went on the win the British Universities championship. Then followed the Ann Dunning memorial trophy, a nine a side competition, which saw the Fr Murphy’s loose narrowly in the semi-final and our player Niamh McGrath, being awarded player of the tournament. It was a fantastic day of football. The day after the Camogie league final, our footballers were out in the championship against Tir Chonaill Gaels and in spite of some of our players having to play two championship games in two days, they acquitted themselves well running up a huge score and ending up comfortable winners Just recently the club players in both codes were asked to vote for their players of the year. After a huge vote, several players were very close. In Camogie, Emily de Caires, whose father is from Guyana and mother of West Cork origin, only took up the sport in April and received votes from many of the players as did Emma McShane, Niamh Kennedy and Mel Hogan, but the players camogie player of the year was Caroline Hanley. In the football it was also a close run thing; Connie Lynch at just seventeen years old and in her first year playing adult football, polled many votes from her fellow players as did Aoife Lyons, Jenny Sheehan, Liz O Malley and Andrea McCoombe, but the players footballer of the year was team captain Aisling Curley, from Roscommon. Later this year we will be holding a corporate golf day, in conjunction with the Cork Foundation, which will see the profits being split between the club and The Field of Dreams, a community horticultural enterprise, to provide meaningful work and life skills for adults with Down Syndrome. The club has already made a sizable donation to this cause, from the proceeds of their Christmas raffle for a signed Ireland Rugby Jersey. The Club is indeed grateful to its many generous sponsors, such as Clonakilty Black pudding, Premier Sports TV, Engage Education, Debbie Smyth, The Raven W6, Tony McGovern Haulage, Seamus Ryan, plant and Marine, Con Dee and The Limerick Association, Your Irish Shop and anyone else who has supported us in any way, without your generosity we would not survive. There is a tremendous spirit amongst the Fr Murphy’s girls and they are eagerly looking forward to September and indeed 2018. 26 Issue 14 Anyone wishing to be part of our on- going success as a player in either code, as a mentor or as a supporter, please get in touch.
