Ex-professional Rugby League player Andy Lowe is
the Director of Rugby at Leeds Modernians RFC. He
told Rugby Club Magazine, “Our ethos is to enjoy
our Rugby whatever league position we are in. We
see mainly new faces every season with our populous
coming from the student fraternity which makes up
60% of our players.
“We currently put out three senior teams, all
competing within the Yorkshire leagues, our 1st XV
plays in YO3 and our seconds and 3rds are in the merit
leagues. This provides a great strength in depth for
our club as well as having a good crossover of players
with our rugby League sides.
“Unfortunately, we are unable to build junior
rugby at Leeds Modernians due to RFU regulations
and the volume of junior rugby already existing
amongst other clubs in our region.
“It is felt that the name change from Old
Modernians to Leeds Modernians may be getting
used as an RFU test case as there are so many clubs
out there who have held onto their old school links
although ties between school and club no longer exist.
This has certainly been the case with ourselves.
“Our ambition as a sports club is to become more
community orientated and it is generally felt that our
name change is a very positive one that ensures we
send out a strong message locally.”
