Whitby Charter Skippers Association FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORT_IP Whitby Charter Skippers Association T he Whitby Charter Skippers Association has been promoting sustainable cod fishing for more than 30 years and prides itself on being the home of Whitby Boat Fishing. Whitby has been famous for a long time for its cod fishing with the coastline having some superb hard fishing grounds that run close to the North Yorkshire Coast and some wrecks from the First and Second World War. The Association has put together a proud history over the years and Whitby holds the British record for the largest rod and line caught cod at 58lb 6oz. They have around 20 members and look to offer angling to people of any age and ability whether it be to catch fish for the table, for sport or for the thrill of being at sea. They are able to offer boats specialising in short, three hour summer mackerel trips which are perfect for the family as well as ten hour off shore charters aimed at the more serious anglers. Its members can offer tackle and advice and they and their vessels comply with strict Maritime and Coastal Agency (MCA) regulations and codes of practice. The Association is equally committed to safety with all boats fully insured and carrying all of the necessary safety equipment. In addition to their daily trips they also hold three angling festivals a year in Spring, Summer and Autumn. The festivals are among the best in the country with prize money in 2016 set to be more than £7000 for first place alone. The dates for this year’s competitions are as follows: Whitby Charter Skippers Association Spring Festival 2016: 2nd-14th April Whitby Charter Skippers Association Summer Festival 2016: 25th June-17th July Whitby Charter Skippers Association Autumn Festival 2016: 3rd-18th September The end of 2015 saw the retirement of Skipper Jon Whitton who had enjoyed 21 years of successful charters with his boat Never Can Tell-a. Jon had been a vital part of the promotion of boat angling in Whitby and has been an integral part of the WCSA committee. Jon has been a terrific ambassador for the port and angling. There is much to admire about the fine set up that the 74 Issue 12 Whitby Charter Skippers Association currently has in place and this is enabling them to prosper in a difficult financial climate. Hopefully they will be able to keep up the good work for many years to come and Sport in Profile Magazine wishes them the best of luck.
