Leeds Modernians progress both socially and as supporters. Part of this was the introduction in May 2015 of The Cookridge Scarecrow festival run for the community and with a Sing along at Christmas further progress is expected. This is something we will be driving forward in 2016 and beyond. Leeds Modernians is a part of the community in which it is based and this is something that will feature in planning in order to give all in the community the chance to be involved in sport not just playing but working to help develop the camaraderie that sport can bring. The social environment at Akkies has always been great and the club has always tried to play the game in a competitive manner but in the right way. As in all community sports clubs, players come and go and getting consistency of selection can be difficult. The spirit within the team therefore sometimes has to be rebuilt but it always comes through and seeing new players to the game thrive and experience what makes it so enjoyable is particularly rewarding. As ever at Akkies we try to maintain a positive attitude and are looking forward to the challenges ahead. Whilst we endured a tough spell of results when crippled by injuries and unavailability, some new players made a real difference in the second half of the season and the improved results and performances give every reason to be optimistic next year. We aim to build on the improved form towards the end of last season on the field and to continue the Akkies traditions of developing players in a welcoming environment and being innovative in putting on unusual but enjoyable social events! Whilst we don’t have a junior section as such, at the heart of the club’s ethos is a desire to help develop players, so whether young or old everyone is welcome to try the sport of Rugby League and see whether it is for them. The club has always welcomed players from all backgrounds but one of the fundamental aims of the club at its inception was to smooth the transition of players from the student and junior game into senior Rugby League. Fortunately the club has maintained a core of more senior players and officials who understand this challenge and who can help make this transition easier. Whilst the club doesn’t specifically represent a particular community, the club has very much had a ‘community’ feel about it throughout its existence and long may this continue. Much can change in 5 years and the focus is more on what is immediately ahead. However hopefully the club can continue its ability to challenge and surprise more established clubs and continue to be an enjoyable one with which to be involved.” Affordable Funerals Service provides a 24-hour funeral service to people living in Leeds and surrounding areas.
