For over 20 years, this innovative UK company has been
developing exciting new solutions for the monitoring of rotating
and reciprocating machinery.
For more than 20 years Icon Research has been providing
diesel engine analysis instrumentation to the world’s
shipping industry. In 1993, the company introduced
its high accuracy instrument range complemented by
sophisticated but user-friendly analysis software that was
one of the first to run on a WindowsTM computer platform.
Since then, Icon has become a household name in the
marine market, supplying its products to the world’s
tanker and container fleets, the cruise industry and naval
forces.

been heavily involved in monitoring machinery using
vibration analysis. However, we saw an opportunity
in the world’s marine industry to provide a system that
not only evaluates the condition of very large diesel
engines but also analyses the operational performance
of the engines resulting in increased fuel economy and
reduction in emissions. The large majority of ocean-going
vessels and inland shipping is propelled by diesels, so it
is a significant market to aim at. Over time, we have
carved out a specialist niche in the marine industry and
have grown to be a highly respected player in the area of
engine monitoring and diagnostics.”
Icon Research offers both portable and fixed installation
engine surveillance systems. Fixed systems are
becoming more in demand as operators need continuous
data to reduce fuel consumption and keep emissions
within ever tightening limits.
The company operates out of its office near Edinburgh. It
is a truly global organisation with over 90% of its products
exported to every corner of the world.

Icon Research supplies instrumentation and software for monitoring large diesel engines that
are used primarily in the marine industry. Icon has been supplying portable and on-line systems
for more than 20 years and can rightly claim to be a leader in this market. Many of the world’s
shipping companies rely on the Doctor range of instruments for accurate analysis of engine
performance resulting in increased efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.
