Seaham Sea Angling FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORT_IP Seaham Sea Angling Club S eaham Sea Angling Club (SSAC) is based at George Tully House, South Crescent in County Durham and they pride themselves on being the Premier North East Club. SSAC was first established in April of 1912 after the construction of the outer piers when the Sixth Marquess of Londonderry requested it after an increase in the number of anglers fishing from the piers. At this time angling was considered to be a good source of food for miners in the local area. Since then it has moved on to become a sport although many anglers would still like to take home a good cod or two. The membership at the club grew significantly after the 2nd World War and this led to a headquarters being built in around 1950 in order to serve the members and committee. The ‘hut’ that was built served for 34 years until the club was given new land, allowing a brick building to be built. Clifford House was opened in 1984 and was used until it was decided that the land was needed for retail development in 1998. SSAC worked with the local authorities to find a new home and eventually settled on George Tully House which is a two storey headquarters near to the dock entrance with its own private car park. It is named after the now deceased SSAC secretary who did a fantastic job for the club over the years. In the current financial climate it is vital that any club is run as a business and there are a number of costs that need to be met to sustain an ‘angling premises’. SSAC look to cover these costs with income from regular annual membership, members using the facility and a good turn over from competitions. With this in mind they run a number of junior, senior and open competitions which help to generate income and maintain the interest of the membership. At present, they hold approximately 70 competitions every year which works out at an average of one every five days which obviously generates a lot of work for the committee. Their committee deserves tremendous credit for all of the hard work that they put into making the Seaham Sea Angling Club the success that it is today. Hopefully they will be able to continue their good work for many years to come and everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine wishes them the best of luck for the New Year. 16 Issue 12 Rutherford's Angling Ltd is an independently owned and run specialist sea fishing tackle retailer based in the north east of England.
