ingston Rowing Club is one
of the oldest established
rowing clubs in the
country having started in 1858. Regarded
as having one of the best stretches of
water, with the 4 miles between Tedding
Lock and Hampton Court Palace, it has a
rich history of success.
With over 250 current active members
it continues to be a famous club in the
rowing world with continuous aspirations
for success and being a strong part of
the local community of Kingston Upon
Thames. Sport in Profile Magazine caught
up with their Chairman Mike Bate and
Captain Danny O’Dowd to find out more.

SiP: How long have you been involved
and what first attracted you to the club?
Mike: I have been a member of KRC
since 1988 (in my twenties) and was
introduced by my manager at the time
who used to be Captain there. That
was why I drove from Wandsworth,
where I lived, instead of joining one
of the Putney-based rowing clubs
which would have been closer.
I then moved to a house 200
yards from the Club! It was
a great opportunity to do
something different to keep
fit and make some great
new friends. I am in my 5th
year as Chairman, having done 5 years as
Honorary Treasurer for 5 years early on.
