Shildon FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORT_IP Shildon AFC S hildon AFC was first established in 1890 and they joined the North Eastern League in 1907. Over the years they have put together a history of which they have every right to be proud, winning the Northern League on five separate occasions. One of their most successful periods came in the 1930s. In November of 2003 they managed to reach the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in 42 years although they were eventually beaten 7-2 by Notts County. They are affectionately known by their supporters as The Railwaymen after the wagon works that were a major employer in the town for many years. At present they are based on Dean Street in County Durham and their first team currently competes in Division One of the Ebac Northern League. They are a fine example of the important role that a club can play in their local community. “Shildon AFC is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however and this is reflected by the fact that they also have a number of youth sides in place.” This season their first team has made a fantastic start to their league campaign, putting together a record of eleven wins, a draw and four defeats from their sixteen matches. This sees them well positioned in second place in the table with thirty four points on the board. This should provide the team with the perfect platform from which to build as they look ahead towards the rest of the campaign. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and have a little luck with injuries they have a good chance of mounting a serious championship challenge. One of the highlights of the team’s performances this season has been the attacking brand of football that they have been able to produce. This has been reflected by the fact that they have already hit the back of the net 46 times in the league alone at a rate of nearly three per match. One of the key factors in their freescoring nature has been the form of Mark Doninger who has notched on twelve Bowtell's CAR CARE BODY REPAIRS and RESPRAYING Unit C2 Roman Way Industrial Estate Bishop Auckland Co.
