shetland golf club The season is a very short one being so far north, running from Mid-April to Early September. Weather can also be a major headache for the greens staff as has been the case this year which has been the wettest for a number of years. Only now at the end of June is the course beginning to look its best with drier fairways and firmer greens but with the rough now starting to become “lush”. As the club has an ageing membership, a lot of effort has been put into junior coaching and encouraging young people to take up golf. A number of members both male and female have undertaken coaching courses under the Club Golf Programme. Junior coaching sessions take place every Sunday afternoon over the summer covering all aspects of golf skills. Finance is of course a big issue facing all sporting clubs, so the committee has worked hard over the last few years to gain sponsorship from local companies. All 18 holes are now sponsored, with a large number of competitions also being supported by local companies, which the club greatly appreciates and a Sponsors Day is held annually to show the club’s gratitude. Funding sources will continue to be a major part of the Committee’s work over the next few years. Another major task will be to try to encourage more people to join the club. Members are needed to keep any sporting organisation or club going, if membership falls then the club will begin to decline. The membership fee may have to be increased to meet costs, h
