whitley bay & tynemouth hockey club FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORT_IP Back to Hockey is a national initiative to encourage adults to return to playing the sport for enjoyment and recreation. The club actively host this initiative over a number of seasons encouraging and enabling adults from the local community to play hockey again. The club continues to link in with the Universities in the region which has allowed the adult teams to develop further. Junior Hockey is available for children 11yrs + with experienced coaching sessions available at The Parks throughout the year. This has included a mini tournament involving clubs from the region. Junior players are encouraged to take part in the Harper League, the sole purpose of which is to develop players in a safe and enjoyable environment with game coaching throughout. The club has Junior players involved in hockey at a district, county and regional level. Approximately 25% of junior members play in senior teams throughout the squads including National League. The club enters teams into a number of England Hockey National Competitions during the season. This includes Men’s over 40s and over 50’s, mixed squad and more recently an over 35’s ladies hockey squad aka The Dolly Donkeys! The Dolly Donkeys progressed to the quarter finals of the competition this year losing to the team that ultimately won the competition. The club has several players who represent England in the over 40’s, 50’s and 60’s national squads. The club’s main sponsor is Wade Financial. Funding of this type is essential to enable the club to continue to succeed at the variety of levels it does. Longer term aims for the club include trying to raise funding to further develop community links with a facility/club house being built at The Parks with support from England Hockey. Although the club is represented at a National Standard it still strives to be available and accessible to all players of all ages and ability, male and female. 50 Issue 08
