The Sir Bobby Robson foundation a great man's legacy
Sir Bobby Robson launched his charity in 2008 and
described it as “like being at the helm of a team
again.” What he called his last and greatest team.
He became so passionate about it that, despite being
very ill, Sir Bobby spent his last 18 months doing all he
could to raise funds to help others facing cancer. He
said he hoped it would become his legacy.
The Foundation funds projects within the Newcastle
upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that directly
benefit cancer patients from across North East England
and Cumbria - and which also contribute significantly to
international research into the disease.
Sir Bobby always said ‘when’ not ‘if’ we beat cancer. He
believed, with us all pulling together, we will find more
effective ways to detect and treat the disease.
Liz Luff recently took the time to tell us more, saying,
“We’ve been able to fund incredible work thanks to the
money that continues to come in. Thankfully the support
remains there for what we are doing which is fantastic.”
“We’re also pushing for more and more cutting edge
equipment to make sure that we continue to build and
help people in the future. We always use the analogy
that in a football team you need everyone playing
a role or else you will not succeed. I always think of
the foundation as the strikers, everybody is equally
important and we’re at the front pushing all the time.
“Our ethos is what we can do about a problem and it’s
all about finding a solution to the challenges we face.
That is an extension of Sir Bobby and his views and he
continues to be the touchstone of what we are doing.
“As we don’t fundraise we never know what is around
the corner. United Carlton got in touch with us about the
special night that they had in place with the Eagles and
invited us to be involved. It’s these things that come up
for us that are wonderful.
“There are so many small events as well such as social
club events and coffee mornings for example which
also play a vital part in our fundraising. The sheer
volume of relatively small donations has allowed us to
push the boundaries of cancer research.
“We have crossed the £8 million mark having started
as an idea around the kitchen table and will continue to
work to ensure that the most effective ways possible to
detect and treat Cancer are available.”
