he history of Newcastle Speedway
at its Newcastle Stadium (formerly
Brough Park) base in the East End
of the City dates back to 1929, the year after
the sport of motorcycle Dirt Track Racing
was first introduced to Great Britain and that
has been the home of Newcastle Speedway
since that inception date.
Throughout the years many outstanding
teams and riders have worn the colours of
the later named Newcastle Diamonds and
countless national league titles and trophies
have seen the name of Newcastle Speedway
proudly displayed across the sporting world as a
whole and the speedway world in particular.
Speedway is a great night out for the whole family
and one of the major plus points is the fact that the
riders themselves are so accessible to the paying public.
There are very few prima donna’s just hard working guys
doing what they love to do, ride their bikes in an attempt to
make it to the world stage while at the same time taking great
pride in representing their club sides.
It’s that accessibility which draws you in as you get to know
the riders and form a link with them that is quite unique in the
sporting sphere.
Obviously there is the element of danger due to the high octane
action as 4 riders battle away in each race on a confined track
with no brakes, yes no brakes and that is a safety feature but you
would soon learn all about that if you came along and watched
for yourself.
The thrills and the crashes make supporters hold their breath
but after a few visits supporters soon learn to appreciate the
