Potters Resort – Mind Sports
Five-star Potters Resort on the Norfolk coast first introduced Mind
Sports in 2014, replicating the success in 2015 with the addition of even
more board and card games.
Mind Sports feature daily on a few four night midweek breaks with
morning and afternoon sessions of Backgammon, Cribbage, Scrabble,
Go, Chess, Draughts, Dominoes, Uno and Whist Drive. With the aim of
keeping the mind active and encouraging guests to try something new,
the breaks are run in conjunction with English Bridge Directors Eddie
and Kathy Williams who offer tips, advice and tutorials.
Nathan Moore, Group & Commercial Manager at Potters Resort
said: “Mind Sports are popular with guests who enjoy the social and
interactive aspect of the game and playing with like-minded people.
Chess is arguably the most popular sport, enjoyed by millions of players
across the world.
We ensure that our Mind Sports are suitable for all abilities with
guests invited to learn the basics in a friendly environment or enjoy
the strategies and tactics of chess in a competitive tournament. Many
guests are introduced and inspired by a new sport they want to carry on
pursuing so join a local club when they get home.
These breaks proved to be popular in 2014 and we’ve received positive
feedback on how guests enjoy combining a relaxing coastal break with
leisurely trying their hand at new pursuits at their own pace.”
The next Mind Sports break is a four night Early Summer Value
ShowBreak on Monday 22nd June 2015. The inclusive break features
comfortable accommodation, four meals a day for each full day,
live evening entertainment from Potters Theatre Company, daytime
activities, Mind Sports and use of the inclusive sports and leisure
facilities.
Potters Resort hosts a range of breaks throughout the year, including
bridge and bowls breaks.

Several well-established groups are available to help—the UK
Schools Chess Challenge, the English Primary Schools Chess
Association, and the charity Chess in Schools and Communities,
which is seeding the grass roots by placing chess tutors in state
schools.
The situation in secondary schools is poor but improving.
Secondary school teachers should look into the ECF’s Team Chess
Challenge, patterned from the Team Maths Challenge, and the
National Schools Chess Championships, which include national
titles for teams of girls.
SIP: What sort of competition is available within the UK?
PE: All kinds, for beginners and grandmasters! Casual chess is
generally organised by clubs on weekday evenings. Rapid and
slow play tournaments (often called “chess congresses”) are
available most weekends and holiday periods throughout the
year.
Almost all tournaments operate a “swiss pairing” system that
