durham university Outreach Programme “We work very closely as five north-east universities and always have done. We had in the early 2000s the Sports Universities North-East England project which was the model that others aspired to. Having made that work as a group it became easier to carry the projects on individually and we retain very good relationships. Our outreach programme works with schools, disability groups, hard to reach groups, alcohol referrals, drug rehab clients and prisons and has generally been very well received and has had a very positive impact. What you learn with that kind of work is that a once a week session, whilst helpful, is a million miles off solving problems so we’ve gradually tried to do more in lots of different ways to make Durham University as accessible as possible for people looking to take part in supervised sport.” Britain’s Number 1 Team Sports University The University where you can combine sporting and academic excellence. Sport in Action “We also run the Sport in Action project in Zambia with Northumbria, Sterling, St Andrew’s, Bath, Cardiff Met and Loughborough universities taking part. The project is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and involves sending students out for up to six months to work on community sports programmes.
