leicester shire golf club FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORTINPROFILE Leicestershire GOLF CLUB F ounded in 1890, The Leicestershire Golf Club has developed into one of the best courses within Leicestershire. The beautiful parkland course stands to the south of the city, backing on to open countryside. Heavily treed and possessing the finest USGA greens, the 6134 yard par 68 course challenges low handicap golfers whilst remaining suitable to golfers of all abilities. The course was extended to 18 holes in 1899 and in 1910 improvements were undertaken by James Braid which included a number of new bunkers. Then in 1936 the course was extended by Major Charles Mackenzie, brother of the legendary Alistair Mackenzie of Augusta National fame, and subsequently altered by C K Cotton. Two famous professional golfers are members here; Gary Wolstenholme and Neil Chaudhuri and we often feature in the press, the latest article being within the November edition of Golf Monthly. We are a traditional but forward thinking Club who welcomes all guests and visitors. We go the extra mile to ensure that you enjoy a well organised and memorable golfing experience, whilst you establish, build and maintain your new golfing relationships in the relaxing surroundings of our parkland course. Our course remains open all year round offering golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play in our Opens, Invitations, Society and Corporate days as well as our very successful Winter Series, a 6 event Order of Merit. Held on the last Friday of each month between October and March and offering individual prizes of up to £500. Paul Broadhurst, amongst other famous golfers, is a regular entrant for this event. Other players to have entered into the winter series are European Tour winner, Andy Sullivan who won the South African Open 2015 this week (Tuesday) and Jason Palmer, who won on the European challenge tour as well as Paul Broadhurst. Our staff have a combined 255 years of experience working at the Club and pride themselves on offering a superb service. Our building is a unique design built in the early 1960’s over two floors. The ground floor houses our newly refurbished locker rooms, Professional Shop and Secretary’s Office together with our summertime spike bar. The first floor offers all year round bar facilities with superb views across the course whilst allowing members to utilise our renowned catering service in either the Mackenzie Room or our more intimate Braid Room. England Golf maintains that golf has declined by 20% over the last ten years which makes golf challenging for any Club, wherever they may be within the country. Clubs have to be proactive and not reactive these days offering services and facilities that ensure they shine above the rest. We have a five year plan in place to not only increase our members and visitors alike but also to retain our existing members and visitors. Clubs now utilise social media to enhance their profile and we have diversified into offering businesses within the City of Leicester conference, meeting and training facilities. Our 125th year starts early in January with the Captains’ Drive In followed by a Big Lunch. There are several additional matches during the year with other Golf Clubs founded in 1890. The main week of celebrations in June commences with an outstanding Trick Shot Show by Jeremy Dale, open competitions, a fun Texas Scramble using hickory golf clubs and concludes with a Grand Ball and Dinner. A Family Fun Day and junior competitions are scheduled for the school holidays. Our members are looking forward to an exciting and special year. Our Captain’s charity this year is DEBRA (www.debra.org.uk) a charity which exists to provide care and support for families whose lives are affected by the terrible genetic skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). There about 5000 people (mainly children) with EB in the UK and currently there is no known cure. DEBRA also raises money for the essential research into discovering effective treatments for EB and ultimately to find the answe
