westgate & birchington golf club Westgate & Birchington GOLF CLUB W estgate and Birchington Golf Club is based at 176 Canterbury Road, Westgate-on-Sea in Kent on the cliff tops between Westgate-on-Sea and Birchington. First established in 1893 they are currently led by Chairman of the Board Tim Ingleton who is assisted by Secretary David Horton. Over the years the club has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud having originally been leased the land to start the club by Coutt’s Bank due to it being left idle in the 1890’s after a slowdown in building. Before that it had been part of Westgate Farm. This allowed for a 6 hole course to be opened on Saturday 20th May 1893 and by 1908 it had been expanded to 9 holes. The next big development came in 1913 when a limited company took over the course and carried out works to improve the course. By 1918 when it came up for auction it had been expanded to 18 holes and was purchased by Arthur Read. He was eventually succeeded by his son Ivor Read who went on to be Club Secretary for many years. A new clubhouse was opened in 1924 and at the time they also had 22 tennis courts available to use.
