tyneside golf club Tyneside FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORTINPROFILE GOLF CLUB F irst established in 1879, Tyneside Golf Club is the oldest inland club in the North East of England and is seen as one of the finest parkland courses around. The course is just over 6100 yards and although it is not one of the longest it is still able to provide a stern test for golfers of all abilities. Club President John Cushnaghan gives more information on the course on their official website, stating, “Tyneside is a beautiful and challenging golf course tucked away behind Ryton village and set high above the picturesque Tyne valley and river. Established in 1879, this is one of the oldest golf clubs in England and a warm 'Geordie' welcome awaits you in our lovely old pavilion clubhouse. Come and see us for yourself - you will not be disappointed.” The club was set up on the 13th November at a meeting in The Douglas Hotel, Newcastle with twenty five founder members being recorded in attendance. Since then the club has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud. Over the years they have relocated twice, moving further up the slopes of the valley. It has kept its current layout for close to a century after being designed by Harry S Colt who also worked at St. Andrews’ Eden Course and Wentworth and has a superb reputation within the game. This has ensured that the course is both challenging and enjoyable with high quality greens. Despite having been extended over 34 Issue 05 the years, it is still a relatively short course with accuracy being the key to putting together a successful round. A number of undulations on the sand based fairways around the course serve to test a golfer’s skills. With such a superb setting, there are many memorable views including the sun reflecting on the church steeple and the clubhouse on the stroll home at the 18th being a particular highlight. The 13th hole is one that is rather notorious for being difficult and has the potential to affect a player’s card. Nicknamed ‘the coffin’ it requires both the first shot off the tee and the approach to be well judged in order for success. One of the standout features of Tyneside Golf Club is the superb work that they do helping young players to get involved through their youth section. This part of their set up looks to give youngsters a chance to play the game in an enjoyable and safe environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club to be able to attract young talent if they are to be sustainable over a long period of time, particularly in the current financial climate. This is an area that Tyneside Golf Club appears to have covered which should set them up for a bright and successful future. Off the course the club is committed to providing visitors with a warm welcome whether they are coming from nearby or have travelled from further afield. They have some superb facilities and are happy to cater for groups as small as 2 upwards. This in turn has the potential to provide them with a valuable source of additional revenue and allows them to provide golfers with the best experience possible. There is much to admire about the set up that Tyneside Golf Club currently has in place which serves to back up the fantastic course that they have. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come and everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck. www.tynesidegolfclub.co.uk -Twitter: @TynesideGC
