THIRSK HOCKEY
CLUB
Trevor Bosomworth has been a member of
Thirsk Hockey Club for the past 15 years and
during this period has made a significant
contribution to the success of the club,
especially in the junior section.
He has gained his level 1 and level 2 coaching
qualifications as well as various certificates associated
with child safety, welfare and equality.
He has been totally dedicated to the clubs coaching
programme, being available for the two coaching
evenings a week and the occasional time on other
evenings for dedicated team training. He also visits
various local senior school and primary schools in
the area to either introduce the children into the sport
of hockey or furthering their skills. This will be during
daytime hours and despite his busy work schedule
these are still seen by him as a priority that should not
be missed.
In 2012 he was selected to carry the Olympic torch
through Thirsk and in his statement to the local press
on the day stated:

ISSUE 03
“I have given hours and hours of my time over the past
3 years to go into many primary schools, secondary
schools and at local Hockey Clubs to encourage
children from 6-18 to play hockey. I am passionate that
the lack of qualified teachers and coaches in the area
should not be a reason for children not to get chance
to participate in such a wholesome team sport.
I give up lunchtimes, afternoons, evenings and
weekends and try to cast my net as wide as possible
in order to give as many children as possible a chance.
Team sports are so rewarding physically, mentally,
socially and you can be a participant in hockey from 6
to 60 no problem.”
His coaching has then led on to team management
which has involved travelling with various age group
junior teams at weekends to various locations around
Yorkshire. His coaching of these teams has led to high
achievements for our small rural community club an
envy of many of the much larger clubs of the county.
Thirsk entered 18 junior teams into the Yorkshire Youth
Hockey League (YYHL) in the 2013/14 season, the
third highest of any Yorkshire club. All the teams will
have been involved with Trevor’s coaching at some
time during the season.
