THIRSK HOCKEY CLUB [THIRSK] [HOCKEY CLUB] Thirsk Hockey Club is a terrific example of the positive effect a well-run community establishment can have on their local area. Sport in Profile Magazine caught up with the club’s Chairman Michael Rushmere to find out more about the good work that they have been doing. He told us, “The club is in a positive mood; the junior section is growing continually, the ladies second team gained promotion at the end of last season and the men have increased their teams from two to three. Youth hockey is our future. Over the past several years the number of juniors – under 16 – has increased to over 200 to the extent that we have had to increase the number of training days from two to three. We enter junior teams into the Yorkshire Hockey Youth League (YYHL) which caters for all age groups, both boys and girls. Next season we are entering 19 teams; the third highest of any Yorkshire Club. As a small rural community this is a very proud achievement. 58 ISSUE 03
