Ludlow Rugby Club celebrates its 80th anniversary this season – a momentous event for a
fairly small Shropshire town and it’s gone from a club which did little other than concentrate
on games and social events to one which is at the centre of the community.
The picturesque clubhouse, in the shadow of Ludlow Castle and at the confluence of the
Rivers Corve and Teme, is used for a social event of one sort or another on almost every day
of the week.
The town’s concert band uses it as
a practise hall on the same evening
that the club trains. The Young
Farmers hold their meetings there
and there’s a wedding reception
on many weekends as well as
the social do’s you would expect
a rugby club to hold. An Iron man
event was held there in the summer
and there have recently been two
major cycling events which used the
grounds as a base.
Top referee Nigel Owens was our
speaker at a dinner last month,
while the high-kicking and recordscoring ex-Wallaby David Campese
will speak there in November.
Guests attending the Town’s Food
and arts festivals use the grounds
for parking and camping.
Local book publishers Merlin Unwin
will use the clubhouse to locally
launch their latest best-seller, a
View From the tractor” by former
Ludlow Rugby Club President and
well-known farmer and after-dinner
speaker Roger Evans. Roger played
his rugby from the club in the 60’s
and 70’s and played alongside his
farmer son, David, before retiring
from competitive sport. He’s still
involved with the club and nowadays
enjoys watching his grandchildren,
Rhys and Tom, playing for Ludlow.
Rhys, who plays on the wing is
currently the club’s leading scorer.
“We’ve had to put ourselves at the
centre of the community to survive
in a changing world,” says club
chairman for the last five years, Iain
Braggins.
