COVENTRY BUILDBASE BEES SPEEDWAY [COVENTRY BUILDBASE BEES] [SPEEDWAY] As one of the most successful sides in the country, Coventry Buildbase Bees Speedway has enjoyed another strong season in 2014. Sport in Profile Magazine caught up with the club’s Press Officer David Rowe to find out more about the good work that they’ve been doing. Involvement He told us, “I’ve been watching speedway all my life and my first memories are from the mid to late 80s, with Coventry winning back-to-back league titles in 1987 and 1988. I was first taken by my Dad, who went to all the home matches, and I quickly wanted to see more and more of the sport. I was always attracted by the fact that, in a sense, it’s a pure motorsport – four riders, four bikes, four laps, and a oneminute dash in each race. Yes, there are complex rules and regulations but you don’t actually have to get involved 12 ISSUE 03 in them to enjoy the sport – in fact, quite often, it’s better not to! I’d been producing my own reports on the club on the internet whilst at University and in 2002 I was approached to join their media team. Two years later I found myself as Press Officer, I’ve been there ever since and I also now have involvement in several other areas of the sport including the national press office and television commentary on foreign meetings.” Atmosphere “It’s rarely anything other than positive, especially on a race-day. You know that almost everyone who attends a speedway meeting at Coventry, whether they are working or as a spectator, loves the sport. There are frustrating times, especially when the weather intervenes in well-planned events, but basically if you don’t enjoy it you shouldn’t be involved.” 2014 “It’s been a successful season. Speedway is a particularly tough sport to enjoy a run of sustained success because regulations are put in place each winter which, in theory, equalise the strengths of the clubs going into the next campaign.
