INDIAN GYMKHANA SPORTS CLUB [INDIAN GYMKHANA] [SPORTS CLUB] Indian Gymkhana is a combined Cricket, Football and Hockey club which prides itself on welcoming members of all ages and all walks of life. They are based at Thornbury Avenue in Middlesex and are currently led by the team of President Professor Dr Nat Puri and Chairman Kishore Shah. The club was first established in 1916 and they are passionate about sport and the positive effect that it can have on people’s lives. As they approach their 100th anniversary they are among the largest and longest-standing multiracial Sports Clubs in the United Kingdom. The football section of the club put together a solid campaign last time around as they compiled a league record of having won 11, drawn 7 and lost 12 of their 13 matches. This saw them finish in a safe mid-table position with 40 points on the board. Their cricket section is committed to excellence without any form of prejudice to race, creed and colour and this is demonstrated by the fact that the team currently includes British, Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and West Indians with an equally mixed religious diversity including Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians playing side by side. This has provided the club with a superb platform from which to build during the off-season in order to enable to push on up the league this time around. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions then they should be in with a good chance of putting together a successful season. It will certainly be exciting to see how they are able to progress. The ability to bring people together from many different backgrounds is one of the things that has made the club so successful over the years, enabling them to achieve tremendous longevity. In 2004 the club’s superb work was recognised when they were awarded charity status to ensure that the clubs heritage survives well into the future. There is much to admire about the set up that Indian Gymkhana currently has in place and this should enable them to look forwards to a bright and successful future. Hopefully they will be able to continue to provide people with the chance to take part in sport for many years to come. Everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine would like to take this opportunity to wish them the best of luck.
