BARROW ISLAND
BARROW ISLAND
Barrow Island ARLFC was first established in 1935 and have been playing competitive
Rugby League ever/ since. They are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year and have
put together a history of which they have every right to be proud.
Led by coach Paul Kavanagh
they enjoyed one of their most
successful periods in the 1980’s.
During this period they became
the first Barrow and District
League team to win the Cumbria
Cup, defeating Kells in the final.
They also managed to win a
treble in 1984-85 as they claimed
the Barrow and District League,
Knock-Out Cup and the Top 4.
They claimed the Barrow and
District League twice more in
1986-87 and 1987-88.
Club Representative John Clegg
took the time to tell us more about
the good work the club is doing
in the present day, saying, “I’ve
been involved here for 5 years
now. The club celebrated their
75th Anniversary this year with a
game of past and present players
against GB All Stars.
I think one of the keys to our
longevity has been the pool of
coaches and committee Y[X
