History Glaschu Gaels Gaelic Football Club (aka Glasgow Gaels) is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2014, since it’s founding in 1999 as a merging of two clubs, Glencovitt Rovers (Clydebank) and Paisley Gaels. In the subsequent years, the club has provided men’s and ladies teams for Scottish GAA competitions and has also nurtured an excellent relationship with Glasgow University providing coaching support to GU men’s and ladies teams who compete in British University competitions. Progress In conjunction with the on-going involvement of Glasgow Gaels teams participating in GAA in Scotland and LGFA in Scotland competitions, recent years have seen the club progress on several fronts off the field. Work over a number of years by the club and the Scottish CDA have led to the establishment of an underage section of the club in 2014 catering for 8-12 year olds in the Clydebank area. The first underage club training session took place on 17th March 2014, and numbers continue to be good with 20-30 children attending weekly training 60 ISSUE 01 sessions. The club has participated in 3 national blitz competitions thus far, and is presently competing in the inaugural Scottish U12 League competition which takes place until October 2014. The response from children and parents to this new sport has been exceptional and the experience has been very rewarding for all of the coaches involved who also play on the Gaels mens and ladies teams. The club youth work has come as a direct consequence of our involvement with the Clydebank Community Sports Hub (CCSH) project, which Glasgow Gaels were invited to participate in in late 2011, and focuses on improving facilities at 60 Dean Street Clydebank to enable a range of sports for the local community. On the field, Glasgow Gaels men’s team won the Scottish Shield competition in 2013 and with some excellent new recruits in recent years there is a platform to build on in terms of targeting future silverware. The Glasgow Gaels ladies team is presently in the mix for the Scottish ladies Championship prize in 2014.
