COYOTES
Newcastle Coyotes are a recreational Ice Hockey
team that play out of Whitley Bay Ice Rink in the
North East of England. They are an EIHA registered
team playing full contact hockey although they are
available to play non-contact games if this is better
suited to the opposition.
Sport in Profile Magazine caught up with Club
Representative Sean Ryan to find out more, starting
by telling us about his involvement, saying, “I have
been a member of the Coyotes for about 4 years now,
I previously played hockey briefly in my late teens in
Oxford.
As a player manager the most challenging part is the
arrangement of games, it has become increasingly
difficult to coax teams to travel north to play us at
Whitley Bay Ice Arena.
The most rewarding part of my job would have to be
seeing the guys faces light up when the whistle goes
at the end of a really tough match and we have ground
out a win. It’s difficult to put into words the vast array of
emotions that course through your veins when playing
hockey but nothing feels better than knowing that
you’ve bled, sweated and pulled together as a team.”
As a club we only have a couple of young guys as we
are quite an accomplished club. We don’t directly turn
anyone away without a trial session but some of the
young guys that have asked to play for us just weren’t
of a suitable skill and maturity for a club of our nature.”
Atmosphere
“The mood at the club is great at the moment; we are
riding high after finishing 5th out of 15 teams at the
annual EIHA rec fest tournament held in Sheffield.
We are a very tightly knit bunch of players who have
been together for some time now. This year we’ve had
a few new faces appear and they have really added a
positive spin on things and fitted in from the first drop
of the puck. Things are looking very good from my
position.”
Youth
“I think that Youth Development is very important not
just to our club but to all the clubs at Whitley Bay and
the sport in general. Rec hockey exists so that those
that weren’t good enough to become professional
athletes are able to keep playing after they turn 18 up
to the age of 70. The young players today will be the
rec players of tomorrow.
