Whitley Bay Ice Rink
First opened in 1955, Whitley Bay Ice Rink
on Hillheads Road in Whitley Bay is used by
thousands of people every week and has a capacity
of 3200. The rink is a vital part of the local area and
looks to provide those from the community with
a chance to use the facility whether they are an
experienced ice skater, hockey player or absolute
beginner.
It is available to use all year round and only closes on
Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. It is
one of only two permanent public ice rinks in the North
East which demonstrates what an important facility it is
for the people that use it.
One of the major roles of the ice rink is to host Ice
Hockey matches which it does on some Sunday
Evenings during the season from September through
to March. The Whitley Warriors are perhaps the most
noticeable team to play out of the ice rink and the
Newcastle Vipers also used to play there.
A number of recreational Ice Hockey teams also
use the facility such as Tyneside Jesters, Newcastle
Coyotes, Durham Dragons, Newcastle Predators,
Whitley Bay Islanders, Whitley Wildcats and Whitley
Bay Sharks.
