C H A P T E R 16
The Deserted House

I was lost! Lost in the woods in the middle of nowhere! I started walking in one
direction. I came upon this old crumbled house. It looked deserted from the old
flaking paint, and the moldy wood. I suddenly got a chill. I wondered if I should
go in. I couldn’t stay out here because who knows what is in the woods.
I started for the house. As I approached it I could smell the damp, and dusty
air. I reached for the railing. It was cool and rusty. I started walking up the wobbly, wooden stairs. When I got to the door, I slowly started to open it, and as I did,
the door hinges squeaked. When the door was just a crack open, all of a sudden a
bat came screeching out. As I walked inside I could see a small cast iron oven,
boarded up windows, and the roof had a leak in it. I could smell the burnt candle
wax. I heard the door slam behind me. Then I heard the floorboards creak under
me. I walked back over to the door and twisted the doorknob; it was locked.
I walked into the living room, or what was left of the living room. A lamp was
flickering on and off. I could see in one corner of the room that there were a
bunch of tangled spider webs. I approached a set of stairs leading to the cellar. I
didn’t know if I should go down. It felt like all the hairs on my body were sticking
up along with goosebumps. I started down the stairs, the steps were creaking under my feet. I could smell decaying meat, and the rotten milk. There appeared to
be a lot of carcases down there. I also saw the curtains flapping in the wind. I
heard the floorboards creak above me and down the stairs. All of a sudden I saw
