C H A P T E R 14 Carrie’s Dog by Sydney Vine 1st place contest winner In a thrift shop window, there was a small stuffed purple dog. Like any other child, Carrie begged her mother to buy her the stuffed toy. After all the begging, her mother said yes and bought the 50 cent dog. That night after they ate supper, Carrie was in the living room playing with her new toy. Her mother came in and told her it was time to go to bed. She left the dog downstairs with her other toys and headed up stairs. After the sweet dreams and kisses were exchanged, her mother turned off Carrie’s bedside lamp, closed the door, and went back downstairs. Almost immediately, Carrie fell asleep. Sometime later Carrie woke up. She could hear her mother snoring down the hallway. She looked at her small digital clock. The small numbers read 12:00. Just then she heard a noise downstairs that sounded like something smashed against the ground. Figuring it was her dad coming home from a late night shift, she fell asleep. Only just few hours later did she wake up to another noise. This time, closer. Freaked out, she closed her eyes and forced herself to fall asleep. But yet again, she woke up to a noise that this time, sounded right outside her door.
The door creaked open very slowly. A sour odor swept across the room. With goosebumps crawling up her body, she turned over and flipped on her bedside light. She turned around unsuspecting of what was at the door. A purple dog came into her vision. “MOMMY!” A scream went through the house. 23
