SPLICED LIFE /\r\n\r\nINTERVIEW with KERON GRANT\r\n\r\nSM: How much were you involved in\r\nthe Robocop film in terms of its look\r\nand feel?\r\nKG: Oh, I didn’t even know they were\r\nmaking a movie, I thought it was for some\r\nTV show they were working on that would\r\neventually be cancelled two seasons in. I\r\nwas on it very early, from when they were\r\npitching it to the studio, so I did some\r\nconcept designs for the suit.\r\nSM: What about the motorcycle, being a\r\nhuge motorcycle fan did you get to work\r\non that too?\r\nKG: Nah, that was already designed before\r\nthey got to me, they did ask me to advise\r\nhow he would sit on the bike they designed\r\nwith the suit, but I never got the chance to\r\ndesign the bike sadly.\r\nSM: Do you prefer working traditionally\r\nover digital?\r\nKG: I do like traditional, I like the feel of the\r\npaper and the medium I’m using, and also\r\nyou get the mistakes that you make coming\r\nthrough in the piece, which sometimes\r\nmake you feel like “Oh hey, I’m a genius\r\n\r\nVibrancy, kinetic energy,\r\na passion for technique\r\nand a master of his craft.\r\nAll attributes of a Keron\r\nGrant piece.\r\n\r\n30\r\n\r\nlook what I did?” [Laughs] but yeah, I work\r\na lot with traditional techniques and always\r\ntry experiment with new ones. When I’m\r\nworking digitally though one thing I force\r\nmyself to do is not to erase or cover up\r\nmistakes. So just like in life there’s no Ctrl\r\nZ, it makes it feel more traditional and if\r\nthere’s a mistake it becomes part of the\r\nartwork or incorporated into the piece.\r\nLuckily there’s a place for both these days.\r\nSM: What advice would you give to\r\nartists who want to break into some of\r\nthe fields you’re in?\r\nKG: Just love what you’re doing and draw\r\nas much as possible, every day. If you love\r\nit and you get excited by drawing and\r\ncreating good work it will get noticed. Just\r\nhave fun, drawing shouldn’t become a\r\nchore or feel like work otherwise that will\r\ncome through in your art.\r\nSM: Where to from here for you, do you\r\nhave some exciting projects coming up?\r\nKG: Hmm, I’m working on a very big film\r\nright now that I’m not allowed to say\r\nanything about just yet.\r\n\r\nISSUE 04\r\n\r\n
