SPLICED LIFE / convention / rage 2013 Playing dress-up Not quite sure what this cosplay that we’re referring to is all about? Cosplay is short for “costume play”. Cosplayers dress up as their favourite character from a fictional text, be it a comic book, anime or game. Cosplayers don’t just dress up as their character, in many respects they become their character. Many cosplayers spend hours crafting their costumes, and a great deal of work goes into bringing the character to life through every little detail. The popularity of this activity has grown in recent years, and most gaming and comic conventions will generally include a cosplay competition of some kind, which often includes a skit of them posing and acting in character. A highlight of the rAge cosplay, apart from the awesome Legion Ink show, was the NAG Stand, where three of South Africa’s best cosplayers, Yamaki, KomboKitten and Jiraiya, posed with visitors in a variety of different costumes over the three days. 60 ISSUE 01
