Breast Cancer Awareness and the Power of Early Detection
DR . JUDY CORBETT MD . FACOG
Breast cancer remains a significant health concern , affecting approximately 1 in 5 women during their lifetime . However , there is hope . Since the late 1980s , breast cancer death rates have declined by more than 42 %, a remarkable improvement attributed to advances in early detection and treatments .
One of the most powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer is early detection . When breast cancer is caught early , the five-year survival rate soars to 99 %. Regular screening plays a critical role in identifying cancer in its early stages , when it is most treatable . The cornerstone of this effort remains the annual mammogram , paired with a clinical breast exam . Mammograms , often considered a routine part of women ’ s healthcare , can detect cancer years before a lump or other symptoms are felt . This is why it is crucial for women , especially those over 40 or with risk factors , to prioritize their annual screenings .
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month , a time to highlight the importance of breast health and encourage action . We urge all women to schedule their annual breast screening and remind others in their lives to do the same . Raising awareness can save lives by empowering women to take charge of their health and ensure early intervention if needed .
Breast cancer doesn ’ t have to be a death sentence . Through awareness , regular screenings , and timely treatments , we can continue to reduce breast cancer deaths and offer more women the chance to live long , healthy lives . Let ’ s work together to spread the word — because early detection matters .
