Dine &
DISCOVER by Chad W Walter
I’ ve driven by The Galway probably a hundred times in the year it’ s been open and nearly every time I think to myself,“ I really need to stop in there one day.” So, last month I decided to make“ One Day” into“ Today”. I’ m really glad I did.
A lot of restaurants around here can be summed up with a simple statement:“ Good food. Meh service.” I get it. I spent a few seasons as a server back before I decided I looked a lot better in a Chef’ s Coat. On season the staff is crazy busy. There just isn’ t time to give that little extra. Off season they probably aren’ t making much money, so the incentive to go above and beyond isn’ t really there.
However, places like The Galway Irish Public House, who are smaller and more focused on being a place for locals to hang out year round can, and do, shine when it comes to making you feel welcome and appreciated.
For example …
I’ m sitting at the bar looking over the menu. I asked the bartender to suggest something. 5 minutes later I’ m in a discussion with the owner, two patrons, and the bartender I originally asked over which is better, The Reuben or The Patty Melt. At one point a passing by server shouted out,“ What about the Chicken Killarney?” which threw the whole conversation into a tail-spin. It’ s an experience that makes you feel everyone, including the customers, are genuinely invested in making the place welcoming.
The whole place just feels cozy. From the dark wood, to the fireplace with chairs all around, to the immaculately clean bar; it seems as though the entire goal from the start was to make you feel as comfortable as possible.
