Brushstrokes of Nature
Inside the Landscape World of Mary Ann Brechun
There’ s something quietly captivating about Mary Ann Brechun’ s landscapes— they don’ t just depict a place, they invite you into it. Her newest collection is a vivid exploration of skies, mountains, and imagined terrains that feel both familiar and dreamlike.“ I like to paint how a place makes me feel,” she says.
“ Sometimes it’ s a real scene, sometimes it only exists in my head— but I always want it to feel magical.” That magic often begins with a walk. Her daily dog walks spark 95 % of her inspiration, even along the same neighborhood paths.“ There’ s always something new to see.”
Mary Ann’ s artistic journey began in 2007 with an adult oil painting class that she never wanted to end. What started as a class turned into a creative community. Today, her“ studio” is her light-filled dining room— a space that allows her to paint without feeling isolated. It’ s where soft classical music plays and the colors of nature begin to take shape on canvas.“ I used to avoid landscapes because I didn’ t want to paint another green scene,” she admits with a laugh.“ But I’ ve started exploring the sky as a way to bring in color.” With a background in computer programming, Mary Ann brings both imagination and structure to her work. Her hope? That her paintings make you pause and wonder— where does that trail lead, and what’ s just over the hill? You can find Mary Ann’ s work at Pink Pelican Art Gallery in Orange Beach, Gulf Coast Art Alliance in Gulf Shores, and Hello Gallery Fairhope.
