For Maggie Wallace , founder of Island Life Personalized Medicine , balance is essential . Her day starts early with a cup of coffee and a morning beach walk , followed by a weightlifting session at the gym or at home . Once at her clinic , Maggie dedicates herself to providing personalized care , ensuring each patient receives the attention they need .
Running her own practice has allowed Maggie to design her day around both her patients and her family . " For me , the balance comes from having control over my schedule ," she explains . This freedom enables her to provide high-quality care without sacrificing family time .
Maggie ’ s journey into healthcare was personal . Her daughter ’ s health challenges growing up taught her the importance of patient-centered care . Her biggest supporters ? Her patients . They loved the relationship they had with Maggie as their provider but yearned for a more " old school " approach to medicine . " They would talk to me about how direct access and more time with me was something they wished I could provide ," she explains . They were tired of quick visits , needing to schedule multiple appointments to address various issues , dealing with call centers , and experiencing a disconnected healthcare system . This feedback shaped Maggie ' s vision and motivated her to open Island Life Personalized Medicine .
Maggie understands the importance of balance , not just for her patients but also for herself as a provider . Burnout is a significant reason why many providers retire early or leave primary care . " Many people don ’ t realize that in primary care , we care about almost every aspect of a patient ’ s health , and the demands are high — not even including after-hours charting and administrative tasks ," Maggie shares . " We love what we do , but achieving balance is often hard , especially in corporate healthcare ."
One memorable patient experience highlights Maggie ' s commitment to personalized care . A Medicare patient , struggling with diabetes , obesity , and anxiety , had lost trust in doctors . Maggie took the time to rebuild that trust , helping the patient lose 30 pounds and eliminate the need for diabetes and blood pressure medications . " Sometimes , people just need someone to listen to them ," Maggie says . She believes that stepping outside the traditional insurance model allows for better care .
