Spine Surgery: Healing Safely
SEATING:
• Risers can be used to raise the height of a low sofa or bed.
• Choose a firm, straight-back chair with armrests.
• Add a foam cushion or folded blanket to the seat if you need to raise yourself up.
• Put away any stools, or chairs with wheels.
PETS:
• Make arrangements to keep pets in another area of the house when you arrive home after surgery or arrange for temporary boarding as pets can be a trip hazard.
• Keep pets from sleeping in your bed.
• Do not allow pets to touch or lick your bandage or wound.
ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING:
• Consider setting up rest stations in high traffic areas of your home.
• Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid reaching or bending.
• Always keep a cellphone with you and make sure your caregiver has theirs as well.
• Consider adding a caddy or a bag to your walker. Canvas grocery bags can be used.
• Alternate rest with activities as much as possible to help with recovery.
MEALS:
• Place frequently used items at counter height.
• Prepare or purchase pre-made meals to freeze and stock up on non-perishable foods that are easy to cook.
• Allow neighbors and friends to bring you meals if offered.
• Drink plenty of water / fluids and eat a balanced diet. Continue to take a stool softener while using pain medication to prevent constipation.
CLOTHING:
• Choose secure shoes with a heel / back and a non-skid sole to wear to the surgery center and at home afterwards.
• Choose loose fitting, comfortable clothing to fit over bandages and / or brace. Try to have a few weeks of clean laundry available beforehand for after surgery.
• Obtain help from family, friends, neighbors with housekeeping and laundry.
CARING FOR YOUR WOUND AFTER SURGERY
• Change bandages as instructed by your surgeon. You may need help with bandage change or wound care.
• Always wash your hands before and after touching your bandage. Avoid touching your wound directly.
• Keep your bandages clean and dry.
• Do not submerge yourself in water; No tub baths, hot tubs, or swimming until cleared by your surgeon.
• Do not use lotions, creams or powders on your incision unless prescribed by your surgeon.
OTHER SAFETY TIPS:
• Energy conservation principles,“ work smarter, not harder”; take frequent breaks as you resume activity.
• Wear your brace or collar as instructed by your surgeon.
• Do not drive until cleared by your surgeon. Never drive while taking pain medication.
