Message from City Councillor , Snowden , City of Montreal

Mr . Marvin Rotrand

Dear Friends ,
Alas , the on-going COVID pandemic obliges us again to celebrate online one of the most anticipated events of each summer in Montreal ’ s Caribbean Community .
Spice Island Cultural Day , which celebrates the lively culture and cuisine of the lush spice island of Grenada , has become an annual fixture of Montreal ' s festival season . The event allows Grenadians in Quebec to express their pride in their origin and heritage while proudly proclaiming their Canadian identity as well .
In past years Spice Island Cultural Day has attracted a happy crowd of thousands to Vinet Park in the Sud-Ouest Borough to enjoy good music and spicy food in a celebration that showcases the small and unique nation of Grenada .
Last year , due to COVID-19 , festivals and gatherings were canceled in Montreal and Spice Island Cultural Day was presented in an entirely different format - streamed live on Facebook and You Tube . The new format shared the pride of the local Caribbean community on a global platform and attracted a worldwide audience of some 80,000 . Many of Montreal ’ s most recognizable media personalities were enthusiastic participants in this very successful on-line event .
Word of mouth has already created a great deal of interest for this year ' s Spice Island Cultural Day which will be broadcasted on July 10 .
Our Borough Council in Côte-des-Neiges-Notre- Dame-de-Grâce is again pleased to be associated with the celebration and has voted a grant in support . We are convinced that this year will top the amazing viewership attained in 2020 .
It will be an honour for me to join the Honourable Dr . Keith Mitchell , Prime Minister of Grenada and the other dignitaries as featured speakers for this global event . I look forward to greeting Grenadians and friends of Grenada , wherever they may be located , and trust many of you will help me celebrate Spice Island Cultural Day 2021 festivities that will virtually highlight Grenadians ' pride in their country of origin .
It is a pleasure to me to continue to offer my on-going friendship and support to the many volunteers of the Spice Island Cultural Day Association who have taken the lead in assuring that the festival will be memorable .
Once again , happy Spice Island Cultural Day ! Looking forward to seeing you virtually on July 10
Best wishes ,
Marvin Rotrand City Councillor - Snowdon City of Montreal
